Fort Jesus, Kenya’s Portuguese Fortress.

Are you that kind of person who picks interest and is always excited about rich cultural heritage? You’d surely be fascinated by this historical site in Kenya.

Fort Jesus

Currently serves as a national museum and one of the most unique historical sites in Kenya, is a Fortress which was built in 1593 by invaders from Portugal on a coral ridge at the entrance of the costal harbor on the costal city of Mombasa.

A fortress built by the design of Joao Batista Cairato by the Swahili people who were thee inhabitants at that time, the inspiration of the design was from Pietro Cataneo, an Italian architect.

The Fort Jesus was used as barracks by the Portuguese soldiers between the period of 1837 and 1895 but was later used as prison when the British protectorates was proclaimed in 1895.

Marked as one of the most brilliant structures from the 16th century and became a UNESCO world heritage site in 2011.
