Introducing Tech.LA Fellows

An internship program for the LA startup community

Tech.LA Fellows is a 10-week paid summer internship program brought to you by Wonder Ventures.

I’m excited to announce the Tech.LA Fellows program: a 10-week paid summer internship program. This program, brought to you by Wonder Ventures and SparkSC, places top students from around the country in LA’s most innovative startups.

Why Tech.LA Fellows?

LA’s ecosystem is strong and growing. #LongLA

In 2018, venture funding in the LA area topped $6.4B, compared to the $5B in funding in 2016. LA has also always been an amalgamation of differing backgrounds, bringing diverse schools of thought to everything from consumer software to aerospace, transportation and logistics.

LA needs to retain our best college talent.
Southern California has the highest concentration of top engineering programs in the country, and graduates more engineers than any other region in the US. Yet somehow, a lot of our best, young talent take internships and then full-time jobs in SF and NYC. This is something I witnessed first-hand as a student at USC.

LA startups need help finding great interns.
Finding a pool of qualified and diverse interns takes a lot of time and resources. Because of this, startups tend to not bother with internships, and top students turn to the big tech companies, consulting companies and banks for internship opportunities.

What is Tech.LA Fellows?

After noticing the challenges above, Tech.LA Fellows was created to give students across the US the opportunity to join LA’s tech ecosystem.

Tech.LA Fellows is a 10-week paid summer internship program brought to you by Wonder Ventures.

Through this program, we are recruiting and interviewing engineering, design, and business candidates with over 500 applicants and counting. We will then match them with the most innovative startups in LA.

Over the course of the 10-week program, we’ll also host regular events with the Tech.LA Fellows, including talks and mixers with founders from the LA tech community. Because this is about more than just an internship. It’s about creating a community of students and the companies they work for.

Final Thoughts

First of all, thank you to SparkSC, a student organization at USC that works to inspire students of all backgrounds to pursue entrepreneurship. They laid the foundation for this idea, and we’re fortunate to work with them on this program.

I’ve spent my whole life in Los Angeles. From my time at USC, including my first internship at Cornerstone OnDemand, to where I am today, I’ve witnessed how the tech ecosystem has evolved. So, I’m very excited to bring this program to the Los Angeles tech community with the support of Wonder Ventures and our Managing Partner, Dustin Rosen.
