Right from the junior to senior, young to old, male to female, amateur to pro, everyone can play the sport with all their oomph and gusto. Yes, we are talking about badminton court dimension. There are many players who even make it a career so that they can show their enthusiasm level to the world. While people are glittering their passion in badminton, some are curious to know how it is played within the court. But before understanding how it is played, you should know the basic that begins from the badminton court dimension.

Although a lot of people who play the sport for pastime do not confine themselves to the standard dimensions badminton, but there are players who follow the rules and play with it especially in the international or world class level. Badminton Court Dimensions: Describing the parts and lines

This game is generally played on either synthetic rubber mat or hardwood floor but both have to be made especially for this sport. If you ever have seen the court, you might have noticed that it has been divided into 2 halves by a net. The standard court consists of lines where players be it individuals or doubles play. While individuals use the inner sideline and baseline, doubles match is designated by outside sidelines. The individuals court uses the same length just like the doubles use. However, for the doubles court, it has to be a little wide since it requires the use of outer lines. To get into more details on badminton court dimension, the article will describe each part and line of the sport below:

Baseline:

It is basically the backline at the boundary that is parallel to both the ends of the net. The length of baseline is typically the overall width of the court.

Center line:

A line that is perpendicular to the net and separates the left and right service court boxes down the middle is the centerline of the court.

Service box:

An area formed by the centerline, base line and singles side line on singles match while on the doubles match, it is formed by the centerline, doubles side line and doubles long service line.

Short service line:

This line covering the width of the badminton court. It happens to be the nearest line running parallel to the net.

Doubles side line:

That covers the external boundary lines along with the base line.

Singles side line:

A line running at the inner of the doubles side line and parallel to it.

Alley:

Alley is an area forming between the doubles and singles side line. It is basically counted as the outer of the boundaries in singles match.

Doubles long service line:

The line designating the back service for doubles is the doubles long service line. It also covers the width of the court.

Badminton Court Dimension According of BWF

When it comes to the badminton, the dimensions of the court are pretty general and applicable to all the stages, be it beginner, intermediate or pro. The rules and regulations of the dimensions are basically directed by BWF which is short for Badminton World Federation. BWF is a governing association in the world of the badminton sport. It is also recognized as the world’s governing association for the sport by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The BWF is empowered by the Olympic Committee and 180 members of the BWF happen to govern the badminton sport globally. In 1934, the Badminton World Federation began with the name International Badminton Federation that had 9 member till they came up with a decision to change the name in Madrid during Extraordinary General Meeting held in 2006.

The main objective of the association involved promoting, regulating, developing and managing the sport globally. And it has only been achieved in partnership with different stakeholders including the Members of the association, the commercial and media partners of the association and the 5 Continental Confederations.

Badminton Court Size — According to laws of BWF

The Badminton Court Size according to BWF laws are:

Court and lines-

The length of the court is 13.4-meter. The net is positioned right at the center of the court dividing it into two equal halves.

The width of the court is depended on the doubles and singles play of the sport. For singles, the width has to be 5.2-meter. And for doubles, it has to be 6.1-meter.

The distance of doubles long service line has to be 76-centimeter away from the base line at each of the ends of the court.

The distance between the net and the short service line has to be 1.98-meter.

The distance between the centerline and base line has to be 3.88-meter.

Post and Net-

All the lines should form of the areas that they define.

The lines that are marked out the court are required to be easily noticeable with white or yellow.

The width needs to be 40 mm wide as for the line markings of the badminton court.

The shuttle test markings are the 2 short lines, They are marked at the right service court area. While the length of the first short line is 530mm from the baseline, the length of the second short line is 950mm from the baseline.

The height of the net post has to be 1.55-meter from the surface of the badminton court and must stay vertical. It should also be placed on the doubles side lines.

It’s better if the color of the net or mesh is dark and made up of fine cord. The thickness of the net should not go below 15mm to 20mm.

The depth of the net needs to be 760mm and the width of it must be 6.1-meter.

The top of the net should be 1.5m from the court’s surface right at the mid-point.

Now that you know the most technical part of the sport which is the dimension. Guess it would be easier to play the sport in more like a pro by following the standard dimensions of the court.
