A reminder from Maslow

on happiness

Maslow’s need hierarchy model

Abraham Maslow is best known for his “Needs hierarchy” model — which basically describes the progression of human needs from hygiene ( food shelter etc) to love, self esteem and ultimately Self Actualization.

Though, one may think that the progression is sequential ( i.e. only when you fulfil the most basic need will you progress to the next), it is not really that way in reality. We all have multiple needs at the same time. So, yes, we may be struggling with hygiene needs at the time, but that does not mean that we don’t have self-actualization needs at the same time.

Self-actualizaton is really about realizing your true potential and Maslow observed that every one has this need.

Here’s a quote from him on this

“If you deliberately plan on being less than you are capable of being, then I warn you that you’ll be unhappy for the rest of your life.”

Ouch !

So, it’s important to ( as early in life as possible) to determine what would be that level of self-actualization and start working towards it. Otherwise, you know …!

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
