Women Harassment Digitalized
I know you are thinking Why I(male) am writing on this topic. None of my friends or relatives have been harassed. It is a long story, which I will tell you in brief.
Our esteemed Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi, has given us a slogan of “Digital India”. Currently 20% of Indian population uses Internet and 85% of U.S population uses internet. Current Govt. has also digitalized various internal processes. Our PM has inspired us all so much that even women harassment has been digitalized.
I am working on a startup idea named Salefee to help Branded retail stores improve their footfall. As a part of pre-launch strategy, we created few fake female Facebook profiles. [ I know you must be thinking that using female as a tool for marketing is equivalent to harassment . This is wrong. I accept my mistake and apologize] We did everything to make the Facebook profile seem real and professional. After few weeks of getting active on those profile, we saw the below things happening :
1) 100+ Friend request everyday : First few days were exciting. From 20 friends we went up to 500. Few days later we realised What would be happening to females.
2) Bombarded with Video call requests and Messages : After we crossed 700 + friends in a week, we started facing the heat. We were attacked by chat messages like “Hi”, “How are you”, “ Thank you notes” etc. Video call requests were ringing after every minute.
3)FB wall flooded with Thank You notes : This was a strange phenomenon for us. People never say Thank You for any favour you do ( Ok. Don’t attack. Most of the people. Not you).
4) Cornered us with Dirty Audio’s, picture & texts: Every women reading this can relate. I don’t need to explain.
All the above made me and my business partner pull our hairs. We jinxed by saying “ Yaar Ladkiyan kitni parensan Hoti hongi”
Now, I understand what does a female go though because of us(men). Even LinkedIn ( So called professional network) is used to harass women.
March 8 is International women’s day. This represents years of struggle of women fighting for equality and Justice. It is time we respect them and stop harassing them. If you are looking for dating, then you have Tinder, Truly-Madly etc for that. Let Facebook be for connecting with friends and LinkedIn be used for professional purpose.
I would request all the females reading this article share the atrocities you have faced online. Also suggest ways to stop this online harassment.
I would request all women readers to share their online harassment stories with us.
