How Draper University Shaped My Venture OpenHealth?

I am excited about the Draper University Pitch Day coming up where all online participants including me get to showcase their ventures to Mr. Tim Draper and other Silicon Valley investors.

I’d be pitching my startup OpenHealth, which is the AirBnB for Medical Tourism. Here is a small elevator pitch which got us an invitation to the Stanford E-Bootcamp:

Listening to the following lectures on #DraperU has contributed immensely in how OpenHealth has shaped up:

  • Disruption by William Hambrecht: It made me realize how important it is for current entrepreneurs to innovate and disrupt industries which have become stodgy. With OpenHealth, our vision is to disrupt the medical tourism sector which leaves patients dis-satisfied and overcharged.
  • How to Pitch by Dave McClure has contributed in sharpening our pitch for OpenHealth.
  • The course Speed & Strength has specifically helped me build the right team for the venture and build the business model.

Here’s how I ended up with the OpenHealth team:

I was the common link between Misbah, Utkarsh, and Rishabh. Having studied and worked with Rishabh at IIIT Hyderabad I knew he was passionate about technology from day one of college. After dropping out of IIIT, I joined Amity University where I met one heck of a hustler Misbah who was always Skyping with Silicon Valley startup founders. Misbah and I worked on community projects together and had the same passion for entrepreneurship and changemaking. All our conversations used to be about startup business models, and how any industry could be disrupted.

When Misbah and I were working on our college fest, we met Utkarsh who happened to share the same passion for design and entrepreneurship. The first question Misbah asked Utkarsh: “What do you think of good design?” and Utkarsh said “Design is everywhere” and then he pointed out to how the building they were in, had some good and bad design elements that affected students everyday. We knew we had a great team and I proposed the idea of OpenHealth to them and the glint in their eyes said it all. We decided to pursue this idea of disrupting the medical tourism industry, and Rishabh came onboard the following weekend.

Together, we have been working for over 2 weeks now during which we have been invited to pitch OpenHealth at Stanford E-Bootcamp from April 17-20, 2014.

Utkarsh and Rishabh are heading product development, while Misbah and I do the hustling and lead business strategy. Nitika joined us a few days ago to help us on the product development.

We are also grateful to our university’s incubator which has provided us a co-working space to pursue the idea:

The next month is going to be very crucial for us, and we’d soon be showcasing our product. I look forward to hearing your feedback.
