[EXPERIMENT] I bet LUCKY people will read this article and UNLUCKY won’t!
Are you lucky or unlucky? You will find out in this article.
I came across following paper on Whatsapp today about scientific study on The Luck Factor by Richard Wiseman!
The gist is:
A ten-year scientific study into the nature of luck has revealed that, to a large extent, people make their own good and bad fortune. The results also show that it is possible to enhance the amount of luck that people encounter in their lives.
But there is one very interesting experiment worth mentioning.
The professor gave both lucky and unlucky (in their own mind) people a newspaper, and asked them to look through it and tell him how many photographs were inside.
On average, the unlucky people took about two minutes to count the photographs whereas the lucky people took just seconds. Why? Because the second page of the newspaper contained the message “Stop counting — There are 43 photographs in this newspaper.”
This message took up half of the page and was written in type that was over two inches high. It was staring everyone straight in the face, but the unlucky people tended to miss it and the lucky people tended to spot it.
Just for fun, he placed a second large message half way through the newspaper. This one announced: “Stop counting, tell the experimenter you have seen this and win $250.” Again, the unlucky people missed the opportunity because they were still too busy looking for photographs.
What does this mean?
The personality tests revealed that unlucky people are generally much more tense and anxious than lucky people, and research has shown that anxiety disrupts people’s ability to notice the unexpected.
They go to parties intent on finding their perfect partner and so miss opportunities to make good friends. They look through newspapers determined to find certain type of job advertisements and as a result miss other types of jobs. Lucky people are more relaxed and open, and therefore see what is there rather than just what they are looking for.
Now coming to my own luck. I don’t get a hell lot of messages on Whatsapp but enough to ignore most of them. I only read messages from some specific people and they are mostly related to work. But today I noticed this message! Even though there was a great chance that I wouldn’t.
Does this make me lucky?
Not enough to prove I think. So I decided to write this article hoping to reach more people because this is an interesting topic to read.
If I get lucky and reach more people, may be some of them will visit my company website and product websites. And may be I will be able to convert some of them in to customers or investors! (Hey, Don’t blame me for these shameless plugs. I am just trying to earn a living here! What do YOU do on Medium?)
Does this make you lucky?
If you have reached so far, there is a fair chance that you are already lucky! And you will notice this opportunity to become even luckier. May be you will “Heart” this article, write a long comment on it or write one of your own mentioning this one!
And the unlucky ones are going to miss it no matter how many “Hearts” this article gets!
So I decided to run an EXPERIMENT.
