Exactly!! the extremes is where the problem is — those tags. My one opinion in support of a political party makes me Modi bhakt or otherwise.
I think we need some sort of maturity and individualistic thinking when it comes diversities. This might sound contradictory when we speak of unity. But, I believe the herd mentality brings the exaggerations and extremities.
But, there are some bits and bytes instances where we might find some unity. For example — there is a friend of mine, technically a colleague. He is a Muslim and belongs to Amethi, UP. I am a Hindu and a Marathi. We both have a lot of political differences. We have many debates on this. Yet, we both respect each other’s difference in opinion. And, we aren’t doing anything great. I think this should be the basis of being a citizen of a democratic country like ours — to accept the difference in opinion, which is bound to happen. I think we should look positively at such instances even if they are minuscule yet real. Although, we don’t find them on social medias. But, they are present.
Also, people get manipulated easily. In my teenage years, I was impressed by a Marathi political leader who made those speeches against UP people. It was a big uproar and in news headlines. Although, I subtly ignored his violent approaches — thrashing people coming from UP. But, I actually thought — UP people come to Mumbai are outsiders and taking our jobs and land.
But, as my thoughts matured — I realized, I was completely wrong. I was just impressed by Raj Thackery’s oratory skills. That’s it. Everyone has all rights to move to any part of our country. And, Mumbai doesn’t really belong to only Maharashtrians — it is all of us staying here for years.
I know we are quite far away from that unity — the goodness. But, somewhere, I really wish to find that unity in our country. And, so do you. But, you think objectively, which is the reality. And, sometimes, I don’t. I have some sort of biased views.
Though, we might take another generation to reach something tangibly good to see — looking at the today’s scenario. But, it is worth the effort.
