Slum House Millionaire
On a fine summer evening I was walking down the road just outside my colony and I realised the irony of the world. On my right hand side was the glorious Palm Green colony that was known for its remarkable infrastructure, wide variety of flora and fauna and the innumerable facilities provided in it. And on the other side was a temporary settlement of construction workers. These inhabitants of the slums were the ones who built these spectacular buildings and yet they are the ones living in tent and huts. Troubled by the thought I had walked more than a 3 kilometers away from home. I thought I would be best to head back home before it gets dark.
While listening to music on my earphones I could see a flickering street light and the far end of the road. I cursed the maintainence personnel for not doing there job well. Also this meant that I was close to my colony. As I rhythmically walked to my music unaware that it was sun down. Suddenly I was startled to see that all the street lights had vanished, only a single flickering street lamp was in the middle of the road under which I stood paralysed.
After a long thought I shrugged my shoulders and blamed my bad memory or unobservant nature for the street lights might have be taken down to be replaced.
Moving further ahead I met an old friend. The both of us studied back in school. We had met after a year. We instantly started talking about the old memories and the pranks we pulled off on teachers. Walking back to our place we reached my colony. Standing outside the gate I turned and to my surprise the entire slum area was far better than a temporary shelter. It was like any residential area. All the houses were made of concrete and steel. No tents were visible. Immediately, I asked my friend that if this was a slum. He replied with a nod. I smiled and said that while walking today I had seen tents and huts. He laughed at me and said that each and every house was fully furnished and were equipped with air conditioners and TVs. I started at him and asked him if it was a joke. That moment a pair of hooded men nudged the both of us and were running away from the slum area. My friend shouted calling them blind fools. I was surprised to see so many mysterious activities today. I bid my friend goodbye and moved to my colony gate.
Moving past the gate a guard shouted and called out my name. He asked me to sign on a register. I signed it and asked him why this new procedure was being followed. He looked at me and said that a there have been reports of robberies in our colony. I was astonished to hear that as we had the best security systems in all the houses. Thinking about the robbery, furnished slum homes with TVs and ACs and the hooded men I entered my home. I walked right into my room to find a TV and AC missing.
