This is What Happens When a Woman Supports Bernie Sanders Online

Here is the thing I’ve had trouble reconciling re: social media trolls and the associated misogyny/racism/sexism/xenophobia, etc. Prior to social media being in place, these people still existed, and they either kept their ugly opinions to themselves, or shared them with like-minded people who supported the stupidity. With the internet, they have the ability to throw their ugliness out into the open, often anonymously. Are we not making the problem worse by amplifying their voice through posts like this? I know its terrible, I know its proof positive of major issues we have in society, but I also know that its not new — and that it was a problem prior to the internet, and it’ll continue to be a problem with whatever comes after the internet. It reminds me of the troll-fighting Lauren Mayberry from CHVRCHES engages in — its a noble cause, its the right thing to do, but its trying to fight back against a fire hose. Humans can generally suck, and I wonder if instead of trying to fight the fire hose, we focus on how to keep the trolls isolated somehow. Regarding Emily Ratajkowski and the response she’s gotten — the thing I always find interesting is that the majority of losers that make loser comments almost always are the ones that are following the model’s accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, etc etc, all while lambasting the women they ogle at. These people have some serious issues they’ll probably never deal with, and I think we only prod them on to do more by validating that what they say even matters to anyone.
