I am indeed on the side of the cynical response: students are being given no opportunity to be exposed to the benefits of doing the writing themselves because we are inundated with technologies that do both technical and creative things for us. I agree that I see troubling signs in creative fields such as art that people are giving up their access to creating things directly without understanding that they are giving up self-expression to a computer.
