Mornings can be a powerful time. A time to set intentions. A time to get focused. And a time to start the day off right. That’s…if you allow it to be.

Unfortunately, many of us stumble into our day instead of owning it. This doesn’t have to be you. Here are five tips to start your day off like a boss.

1. Don’t Hit Snooze

Get up and get moving! Contrary to popular belief, hitting the snooze button doesn’t actually help you. In fact, research shows that you’ll feel even worse if you hit snooze multiple times. It will set you up for a groggy day.

2. Do Not Check Social Media

When you wake up, do you immediately grab your phone and start scrolling through Instagram, tweeting about how much work you have, and Snapchatting a selfie? Pro Tip: Don’t do this.

Why? Starting your day by checking social media is like being yelled at by thousands of people at one time. Think about all the unnecessary information that’s coming at you before you’ve had your coffee. It might even cause you to feel like you’re starting your day having to catch up with the rest of the world. Instead, push pause on social media and start your day off with purpose.

3. Eat Breakfast

Just like our parents use to tell us, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Don’t skip it. Eating breakfast can increase your energy, improve your concentration in the classroom and more. (If eggs are your jam, read this.)

4. Workout

Let’s face it. At the end of a long day on campus, the last thing you want to do is go to the gym. Instead, start your day off with a bang with a great workout. There are tons of benefits to working out in the morning. It CAN increase your energy (because endorphins!), it makes your brain better, and it improves focus. Even better, it keeps the rest of your day wide open.

5. Plan And Review Your Day

Instead of stumbling into your day and being reactive, be proactive. Check out your calendar, review your schedule for the day and write down your goals of what needs to be accomplished. This way you’ll be clear on the happenings of the day from classes, meetings, work and more.

Own your day, don’t let it own you.
