RITUALS + MINDFULNESS
These two are soul mates.
“Time to hit the brakes. Rituals can be an invitation to pause and see ordinary moments with a new lens. When every moment is approached with curiosity we let the past and future dissolve and live in the eternal now.” -Chrissy Abram
Rituals. What I have personally experienced as my key to “drop ins.” What are “drop ins?!” I like to think of them as the HOV lane to wherever I am going. They are my rituals that get me back to a state of calm, that bring me into the present moment, that help me locate my physical surroundings (making sure I soak up every minute) and that prep my mindset for the activity. Rituals are not a one size fits all and they can be that simple. Simplicity is key, keep it simple and it will become habitual.
Okay, great…so what’s the deal with rituals and does research have anything to say about it? Of course it does. People who have rituals show an increase in emotional stability, confidence and attention. Their mind spends less time dwelling in the past and less time trying to predict the outcomes. Why does that matter? Research has shown that the when we spend less time out of the present moment we actually make better choices because we are locked into answering the question, “what do I need right now?” No time to focus on all the what if’s and irrational beliefs that we sometimes find ourselves in. Instead, lock into what actually is happening; toss the chalk like Lebron or wear North Carolina shorts under your Chicago Bulls shorts like Jordan. Rituals, simple acts that connect us to the here and now.
