Electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is a burst of electromagnetic energy that can occur naturally or be generated by human-made sources, such as nuclear detonations, solar flares, or high-altitude nuclear explosions.

An EMP can cause significant damage to electrical and electronic systems, including communication networks, power grids, and transportation systems.

The level of concern about EMP depends on the likelihood of such an event occurring and the potential impact it could have on critical infrastructure.

While natural EMP events such as solar flares are relatively common, they typically have a limited impact on modern electronic systems.

Human-made EMP events, such as nuclear detonations or high-altitude nuclear explosions, have the potential to cause widespread damage to critical infrastructure.

Unfortunately, hardening the grid against EMP attacks has not been considered a priority, even though an EMP attack is among the most likely threats.

It is essential to take proactive measures to mitigate the risks of an EMP attack to ensure that critical infrastructure remains operational during and after an attack.

A comprehensive approach is necessary, which involves hardening critical infrastructure, using protectors and filters, implementing backup power systems, conducting regular testing and maintenance, and developing emergency response plans.
