Happiness: The Fuel of Successful Life

When we think of happiness, the things that usually come to our minds are; expensive cars, a big expensive house, a big bank balance, high salary job etc. And that is because our society and relationships are built on the notion that Successful life leads to happiness. We find happiness in the success but it is actually opposite. In fact, happiness leads to successful life and I’m not saying only on the basis of my experience. Recently, I have watched the TED talk of world’s leading positive Psychology expert and the bestselling author, Shawn Achor on the Happy Secret of Better Work.

I highly recommend you to watch this TED talk. According to Shawn Achor, the happiness depends very little on external factors, 10% to be precise. While the 90% of happiness depends on the internal factors such as optimism and positive attitude. We should actually look inside ourselves to find happiness and not to depend on the external factors. Shawn has proved by his studies that the conventional wisdom of happiness leads to success is backwards and broken.

Entrepreneurship is a kind of buzz word these days. Everyone likes to be called an Entrepreneur but very few people understand the very essence of it, which is positive attitude and optimism. Entrepreneurs truly embrace this concept of Happiness leads to success. They see difficulties as challenges. They try to stay optimistic and keep their attitude positive even when everything seems impossible. They accept their failure and see it as learning process rather than giving up. From Steve jobs to Elon Musk, we can see that how they used happiness as a fuel to live a successful life.

Shawn Achor calls the benefits of happiness, the Happiness Advantage. His research shows that our brain is more productive when it is in positive mode. Our productivity increase by 31% when we are in positive mode. The recruiters will be more likely to hire a person with positive attitude. There is 40% percent more chance to receive promotion in a job, you will get better grades, and you will live more energetic and healthy life.

So now we have learned that the Happiness is the fuel of Successful life, the question is how we can stay happy and optimistic? How can we extract this fuel of success? According to Shawn, we can actually influence and rewire our brain to think positively. We see the world through the lens of our thinking and if we change that lens by thinking positively, we can master happiness. There are only 5 tips to extract this fuel of happiness, according to Shawn Achor:

1. Bring gratitude to mind: Write down three NEW things that you are grateful for each day

2. Journal: About a positive experience you’ve had recently for two minutes once a day

3. Exercise: Engage in 15 minutes of mindful cardio activity

4. Meditate: Watch your breath go in and out for two minutes a day

5. Engage in a random, conscious act of kindness: Write a two-minute positive email thanking a friend or colleague, or compliment someone you admire on social media

Do these steps for 21 days, and you will begin to see a lasting shift in your mindset towards more positivity. I want to give these tips, a try to find out if they actually work. I decided to first apply 2 of the 5 tips which are; exercise and engage in random act of kindness. Following is my experience of applying these tips and what I have learned.

Exercise: When we engage in exercise or cardio activity, our body feels fresh and active which in turn has a positive effect on our brain. Our brain works positively and actually works more effectively when we engage in exercise, that’s why it is advised to engage in physical activity to generate more ideas or to find solutions. Our negative feelings and anger are released in the exertion that we put during exercise. We feel much more relaxed after exercise.

Engage in random act of kindness: We get internal satisfaction and instant happiness, when we engage in random act of kindness. It is almost natural to feel happy by doing the act of kindness. Kindness instantly puts our brain in positive mode. I have written my experience of random act of kindness in my previous blog.

Happiness lies inside us, we just have to find it and always follow this rule

“ Be happy, be Successful “.
