Beginning of the End

Looking outside, she couldn’t help but be amazed at all the elephants outside her house. The scientist had finally done it. Everyone in the town doubted the scientist’s abilities, no one thought the scientist could actually pull it off, and now no one was prepared for what was supposed to happen next.

Still in shock of what she just saw outside her window, Elizabeth cautiously stepped out onto her front lawn. As her front door clicked shut, she was frightened that the elephants would notice her outside her house, and not in the safety of her room. The elephants did not even flinch at the presence of Elizabeth, it was as if the herd of African animals belonged in suburban Arlington Heights. “This is absolutely impossible! There is no way this is going to work!”, Elizabeth thought as she gazed at the massive animals gathered in her lawn, who were supposedly going to be the new police force. The scientist found a way to infuse defense, safety, and justice genes into the biological structure of the elephants, so that they can act as the police force on the streets so human police officers could do safer desk jobs. Elizabeth, being a decorated police officer, did not approve of the new employees and wanted to see how they would react to human touch. As Elizabeth gently tapped one of the elephants on the leg, she immediately regretted it. The massive creature tensed up and stomped its tree trunk like leg on the ground. The earth shook like there were a million earthquakes happening at once. The elephant raised its trunk in the air giving a long roar that echoed off every inch of the earth. Slowly, all the elephants turned towards Elizabeth’s direction, and the last thing she saw was their red glowing eyes locking in on her own.

Elizabeth ran for what felt like days. Her legs turned to jello and her lungs felt like they had been lined with sandpaper. Just when she thought she lost the herd deep in the woods behind her home, she would feel the pounding in her stomach, hear the battle cry, and know that she would have to continue running. She knew they had to give up sooner or later, but she could feel their presence hanging in the air every time she stopped, so she willed her legs to keep moving.

It took the day three times as long to turn into night. Elizabeth climbed the tallest tree she could find, climbing until the air became thin and her fingers were cut raw. She had a bird’s eye view and spotted her house in the distance. Well, she spotted where her house used to be. She could see the smashed windows and broken foundation from her perch up in the tree, which was miles away. Her heart started beating out of her chest as all the blood drained from her cheeks. She had to get home, she had to make sure the rogue elephants did not find the codes. The codes that could make or break this earth, depending on whose hands they fell in. The earth was on the verge of World War five, and Elizabeth was not ready to make the sacrifices she had to make in the fourth world war. Elizabeth had to get home to save the codes and the earth from the elephants. She had to find help, but with what happened last time, who would believe her now?
