I think that the “being a decent human being” requirement falls to both sides here. While yes, you should absolutely read the documentation before submitting an issue, the nasty, unfriendly response of “RTFM” is exactly what open source *doesn’t* need these days — a bad day is no excuse. Be kind, and encourage participation. People will be rude and entitled, and you don’t have to encourage that, but you shouldn’t be rude back.
