I think that while women’s reactions to a man holding the door vary, so, too, so men’s intentions, and we pick up on that. I don’t want a man to open the door for me so that he then thinks I owe him a smile or a conversation. I’m perfectly happy with anyone holding the door simply to be polite — I do the same. I just don’t think it’s fair to analyze what’s going on on one side of the door and not the other, because it isn’t always benign politeness.
