The Centre Pompidou, situated in the vibrant heart of Paris, is internationally renowned as one of the world’s most popular museums. In 2022 alone, it attracted over 3 million visitors, solidifying its status as the second most visited museum in France, only surpassed by the iconic Louvre. Since its inauguration in 1977, this unique cultural institution has captivated visitors with its groundbreaking architectural Renzo Piano design, while offering a diverse collection of modern and contemporary art and establishing itself as a vibrant hub of multi-disciplinary artistic expression. Although the Centre Pompidou has always been a symbol of innovation and creativity, it seems to have picked up the pace since Laurent LeBon became its new president in July 2021.

Exporting a cultural brand: Centre Pompidou Saudi Arabia and Seoul

Following the opening of its first outpost in Metz, France, in 2010, the Centre Pompidou embarked on a global expansion. In 2015, it established its inaugural branch outside of France in Malaga, Spain, followed by another branch in Brussels, Belgium in 2018. Expanding its reach even further, the Centre Pompidou unveiled its first outpost on a different continent in 2019, specifically in Shanghai, Asia.

In June 2021, the Centre Pompidou made an exciting announcement regarding its first venture in North America, with plans for a satellite museum in Jersey City. Fast forward to 2023, under the leadership of Laurent LeBon, two major outposts were revealed. The first is a large-scale museum dedicated to regional and international contemporary art in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, set to open its doors in 2028 — 2029. The second outpost, a collaboration with the Hanwha Culture Foundation, is planned for Seoul, South Korea, with a projected opening in 2025.

Beyond its physical outposts, the Centre Pompidou has strategically positioned itself as a cultural brand with global recognition. Its successful exportation strategy is evident in its ability to extend its influence and expertise beyond the boundaries of its original location in Paris. By establishing international branches, the Centre Pompidou not only shares its renowned collection and exhibitions with diverse audiences but also fosters cross-cultural dialogue and artistic exchange. This approach to exporting the brand has allowed the Centre Pompidou to strengthen its position as a leading institution in the global art world, attracting visitors from around the world and serving as a beacon of innovation and creativity. Through this strategic expansion, the Centre Pompidou has effectively transformed into a global cultural phenomenon, enriching the artistic landscape of various cities and fostering a deeper appreciation for modern and contemporary art on a global scale.

Multidisciplinary Approach

Beyond its art collection, the Centre Pompidou stands out for its multidisciplinary approach to culture. The institution seamlessly integrates various art forms, including visual arts, performing arts, cinema, literature, music, and architecture, as exemplified by the current exhibition and the largest-ever Norman Foster retrospective. This showcases the Centre Pompidou’s commitment to embracing diverse artistic disciplines and providing a comprehensive cultural experience. Moreover, the Centre Pompidou demonstrates its cultural awareness by hosting immersive listening experiences and premieres of new Daft Punk songs, all offered free of admission. These initiatives effectively attract new audiences to the museum, fostering engagement and expanding the reach of its artistic offerings.

In line with its commitment to innovation, the Centre Pompidou has recently opened its first-ever exhibition dedicated to works linked to the emerging NFT technology. Titled “NFT: The Poetics of the Immaterial from Certification to Blockchain,” the exhibit explores the transformative world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). During my meeting with Laurent in March of this year, I was truly amazed by his depth of knowledge in the realm of digital art, particularly regarding NFTs. His curious mind and openness left a lasting impression on me. It is exciting to see the Centre Pompidou take a pioneering step in acquiring a collection of works that delve into the relationship between blockchain and artistic creation, including its first NFTs. The museum proudly claims the distinction of being the very first institution dedicated to modern and contemporary art to showcase these groundbreaking artworks.

The Centre Pompidou extends its influence beyond being a mere museum; it serves as a vibrant cultural hub that fosters creativity and interaction. Its iconic building design encourages social engagement, with open-plan layouts and spacious plazas providing ample room for gatherings and events. Visitors can actively participate in workshops, conferences, film screenings, and live performances that bring together artists, intellectuals, and the general public. Additionally, the Centre Pompidou houses a public library, attracting scholars and researchers who benefit from its extensive collection of books and resources. This multifaceted approach solidifies the Centre Pompidou’s position as a dynamic institution dedicated to the advancement and celebration of art and culture.

Continuous improvement

In line with its commitment to continuous growth and improvement, the Centre Pompidou has announced plans for a substantial renovation. The museum will temporarily close for a five-year period starting in 2025, allowing for a €262 million ($283.6 million) transformation. This ambitious renovation project demonstrates the institution’s dedication to providing an exceptional experience for visitors, ensuring that the Centre Pompidou remains at the forefront of modern and contemporary art for years to come. As the Centre Pompidou continues to evolve and expand, both through its international outposts and planned renovations, it reinforces its status as a leading institution in the art world. Its multifaceted approach to culture, commitment to innovation, and ongoing pursuit of excellence position the Centre Pompidou as a global cultural icon.
