What’s Your Story?

Time to Introspect

In recent times, whenever I have been asked to share HR overview to a customer, 1 constant question that I am immediately asked is : What’s your story!?

To begin with, I quite didn’t relate with this topic and thought to myself, How can i attach a story to my regular presentation with data and artefacts? Isn’t story for bed time? And, what can be my story? :-p

And, the kind of curious person that I am, I thought to do a bit of study around this topic. Of course the first resort was Google, and I was amazed at the kind of data available under this. The whole world, out of nowhere is glued onto this interesting topic and 'story' is among the highest trending topics. I was definitely pulled and started reading more.

By definition, Story is An account of imaginary or real people and events told for entertainment. Of course, the “entertainment” bit of this definition doesn't stand in the Corporate parlance :)

Now, taking it to a slightly different level, story telling is a skill too, that doesn’t come easy to all. If you are asked to reflect on the past and remember the story that stayed with you for longest, it could be an incident, a movie, and activity or may be just some time spent with family. Have you thought why it stayed with you? That is because, that story touched you, it resonated with your beliefs, it made an impact somewhere.

Fundamentals when told with a story, will always stay with you for long (if not forever).

There is a Senior Leader at my workplace, and he has this art of starting his presentation (whenever addressing), very differently, very out of the box, in a gist with a story. And hence, it always stayed with me for long! (While i was writing ths blog is when I realised the reason why it stayed with me)

Stories mean differently to different people. Being a mother of a 3 yr old, stories did have a different meaning in my life.

However, whats important is that you should let the world know your story. Connecting this to my previously blogged topic on Brand You “Brand ‘You’” (https://medium.com/@accidentalwriter/brand-you-1896cb65d346) , kind of clears up a previously hazy picture. I mean, you can pick up a story of your choice and start putting it in your blogs. More passionate you are about a certain blog, more connected your audience would feel.

Another thought that crossed my mind, just when i was about to publish this.. is why is this act important? I found a deeper answer. The world out there is waiting. With the digitalization impacting our lives, we spend a lot of time online. Its beyond imagination to ascertain which story can have an impact where! And all this only when you write and SHARE, pour your heart out without actually worrying about being judged upon, you are honest, sincere and truthful, you dont mask yourself.

To summarise, while am still at it to learn this art and convince myself explains the time i took to come out with this blog (facepalm).

So, what’s your story?

Signs off.
