Telma, Claudia, and Sandy are the newest members of the Mil Milagros staff team. Each of these women participated in Mil Milagros Early Childhood Development program where they excelled as mother leader volunteers prior to joining our staff team. They now work with three other Mil Milagros’ Community Coordinators — all former mother leader volunteers — to equip mothers in their communities with skills and resources to improve the lives of children and families in villages where more than 70% of the children are chronically malnourished.

Telma, Claudia, and Sandy recently shared their perspectives about becoming leaders.

Why did you volunteer to be a mother leader in the Early Childhood Development program?

Claudia: I became curious about the program when I heard about it from my sister-in-law because I love learning new things. When I participated in my first workshop, I fell in love. When Cristy (Mil Milagros Early Childhood Coordinator) asked the participants who wanted to be a mother leader, I couldn’t raise my hand up fast enough.

Telma: There was so much that we didn’t know about how to raise our children. Many people didn’t worry about their children’s heights or weights because they didn’t know there was a problem. Mil Milagros has opened our eyes to what is best for us and our families, so when they asked for mother leader volunteers, I raised my hand without thinking twice.

Sandy: I loved what Mil Milagros does and wanted to be a part of it. When I heard that Mil Milagros was going to be working in a community near where I lived, I decided to sign up. I’m so happy for the opportunity to help other mothers.

How have you changed since becoming involved with Mil Milagros?

Claudia: Mil Milagros has helped me so much. Before, I was unsure of myself and since being with Mil Milagros and going through the Parenting Journey program, I have much more confidence and my relationship with my husband and children has improved. I couldn’t believe that Mil Milagros saw what I was capable of when no one else had. Now I dream of all of the things my children will be able to accomplish with the help I am going to be able to give them.

Telma: I had never participated in groups before. I was always too nervous and afraid to speak in public. My mother-in-law pushed me to participate with Mil Milagros and when I raised my hand to be a mother leader volunteer, I couldn’t believe what I was doing. But little by little, I started to feel like a leader, like what I said was important. My husband noticed changes in me, too. I am so happy and proud of what I have been able to do and I’m excited to keep learning and to become an effective leader.

Sandy: I have felt a change in myself. I feel stronger and can make decisions on my own. At the beginning, I was so nervous, but I’m learning and observing and doing my best every day. Now, I feel like I can do more than I ever thought I could before. I am helping to make a difference in my community.
