IELTS listening test is the same for both general and academic tests. There are a total of 4 sections comprising 40 questions. You will have 30 minutes to complete the IELTS listening section and 10 extra minutes to transfer your answers on the answer sheet( in case you are giving a paper-based test). The recording will be played only once; therefore, staying focused is mandatory.

Know the format

The listening components of the IELTS have a set format. Knowing what to expect in each part can benefit your preparation. The first two sections are centered on a social dialogue, which means they will be about everyday tasks. Two speakers will speak in the first section, while just one speaker will speak in the second section. Sections 3 and 4 are however based on academic talks, with three to four people discussing in the third section and a single speaker conversing in the fourth.

Practice

Whatever level your English listening abilities are at, you should practice them using the exam format. You can begin with something pleasant, such as movies or television series, but you should progressively expand your horizons to include other platforms. Listening to TED presentations, podcasts, and the news will introduce you to current hot subjects and uncommon vocabulary. As a result, using different mediums will improve your active listening skills.

Keywords

Because the recording will only be played once, you must work efficiently. Before the recording begins, you will have the opportunity to read the instructions and questions. So, as you read over the questions, make a list of keywords that will help you find the answers.

There’s an order, do not panic

This is a benefit because the questions will be in the same order as the audio. If you have to wait too long for an answer, chances are you would already have missed it. Be cautious of distractions from the start and try to identify terms that might match the keywords in the answers.

Spellings & capitalization matter

In questions where you must write a word or words, pay close attention to spelling and capitalization. You will not receive any points if your spellings are inaccurate, even if you have located the correct answer. If you’re unsure about capitalization, it’s best to write in all caps. For those who will take a paper-based test when transferring responses to the answer sheet, be very particular about spelling and capitalization.
