Twitch, the popular live-streaming platform owned by Amazon, had its share of layoffs of over 300 employees as they count cutting costs within their department as their reasoning. Due to this decision, many employees of the gaming community and even creators have questioned if Twitch is on the slow descent of sunsetting.

The Layoffs

They have been a major player in the streaming space for many years, so when the layoffs occurred, many industries turned to see if Twitch was having any telltale signs of loss in financial and strategic direction that alluded to this happening. While Twitch didn’t explain why this occurred, the market is showing increasing competition in streaming, with YouTube and Kick spearheading the move and the shift in corporate priorities as they received a new CEO with Dan Clancey in 2023.

With the rise of streaming becoming oversaturated in all corners of the internet, with YouTube gaming and Facebook Gaming trying to garner viewers and content creators, it’s no wonder that Twitch is being seen on the back burner when these new and more user-friendly platforms come, and try to compete for the #1 spot. Add that with the pandemic and now these corporations must adjust their business model to maintain their competitive edge.
