Warren Ellis is a comic book writer, novelist, and screenwriter known for his work with Marvel and DC comics. He is most recently known for the Netflix series Castlevania (2017–2021). In 2020, several people accused Ellis of sexual coercion and manipulation. It was said that he engaged in several relationships simultaneously without the others’ knowledge. It was reported by several news outlets that around 100 women accused him of emotional abuse and gaslighting during their time with him. Later on, Ellis publicly apologized to the people who had accused him and many of his work, including DC and newsletters, would not continue on his request. Castlevania was later canceled in 2021, but had a spinoff in 2023 called Castlevania: Nocturne, without Warren Ellis’s involvement.

The dismissal of the hit show shocked many fans and they wondered why the show was canceled if the issues arising didn’t affect the standing of the show’s production. They even credit the low ratings of the spinoff to not having Ellis there as he was an actual fan of Castlevania, which is a rarity for Netflix adaptations.

However, many other fans saw the hints leading up to his dismissal as there was a scene in Castlevania that has dubious consent (uncertain if there was consent) between Alucard and the twin warriors that has many people questioning the reasoning behind it. Ellis defended the scene on Twitter calling it fully consensual, but people are seeing it differently after he was booted.
