My Mysterious Ancient European Heritage

I get this. I can’t comfortably embrace the “European-American” heritage passed to me through my mother’s side because, what with the genociding of Native Americans and enslavery of Africans, it’s pretty gross. There is potential on my father’s side — he is the son of a first generation Italian-American and an immigrant from Armenia — but my grandparents had no interest in passing any kind of cultural heritage to him (or me). Even if they had, it would have been a piecemeal heritage because whatever cultural traditions they could claim had already splintered a few generations back — that’s why people end up in the United States, isn’t it? Cultural extinction? It’s unnerving, being unable to put oneself into any kind of context in time.
