The smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum helps with detoxification in every cell, metabolizing carbohydrates, as well as synthesizing and moving lipids within the cell. In addition, the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum also makes steroids, the phospholipid bilayer, and lipids. When the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum is found in muscle cells, it helps with contraction; when inside a brain cell, it helps with the synthesis of horomones. In the liver, it metabolizes glycogen and dexoxifies lipholipic drugs. In the same liver cell, the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum modifies everyday toxins so that they can be expelled in the urine.

As well as all of these lovely features of the Smooth Endplasmic Reticulum, it also comes in a special form called the Sarcoplasmic Recticulum. In this form, it monitors and regulates the calcium concentration within a cell. By doing this, it amplifies signals from moleules in very low concentration, which triggers a response within other cells.
