iPhone 11 design

iPhone 11 will launch later today, and we’ve already got clear images of what we can expect from Apple’s NEW iPhone.

Although we didn’t know exactly how iPhone 11 launch will play out, leaks suggest we’re set to see three new images, including a potential successor to the “budget range” iPhone XR that we’re provisionally dubbing the iPhone 11R.

are we waiting for an intensively upgraded iPhone? You’re probably going to be dissatisfied this year, as the update we’re hearing about can’t hugely exciting — but, according to the leaks we’ve seen the new iPhones areas same to remarkably similar to the 2018 iPhone range.

We got some experience sifting through these leaks

That said, Apple’s tagline for the iPhone 11 launch is ‘By innovation only’ with a modernized Apple logo — so perhaps there’s still a surprise or two in the works.

price

As we know that Apple’s latest iPhones will be expensive, but don’t yet know quite how much capital they will fetch. If anything like 2018’s iPhone lineup, pricing will likely start around £999 and £1,099 for the XS and XS Max successors, and from £799 for the lesser-specced LCD model.

That said, the new iPhone 11R could be a touch cheaper — depending on the new camera technology. A less-costly iPhone than last year (where the iPhone XR debuted for $749 / $749) could happen if not a lot changes to the hardware… but if Apple goes with the higher-power camera, then the same price is likely to be maintained, in our opinion.

Design

the ever-churning online leaks, we already know about the iPhone trio will be first to boast triple-camera setup, with Apple, adopt from new Pixel 4-as similar square-shaped array. We’re also expecting new under-the-hood internals including a 7nm A13 SoC and new Taptic Engine, an updated Face ID system and, according to some more leftfield murmurs, a USB-C port.

The divisive screen notch was popularized by the iPhone X two years ago, but many Android manufacturers have now ditched it for more subtle solutions including the teardrop notch, cutout camera, and pop-up camera. But the speculation we’ve heard so far indicates that Apple will persevere with the notch for at least one more year, despite the fact that it intrudes into the screen and frankly looks quite dated.

Next iPhone, iPhone 11 or iPhone XI?

What will Apple call the iPhone 2019? It’s a tricky one: Apple has backed itself into a corner with the name. Roman numerals could well remain, but how does the iPhone XI follow the iPhone XS?

Apple has been staunch on verbally calling the handsets the ‘iPhone 10’ and ‘iPhone 10-S’. With that in mind, the iPhone XI seems to make the most sense, but then — if the older models remain — there will be an X, an XS and an XI (along with an XR) — and iPhone 11 is easier to understand.

doesn’t easily point to the best, most-desirable model. So could Apple do what’s been rumored for years and simply go for the ‘new iPhone’ as the ‘main’ XS replacement, and stick with the same iPhone XR name, albeit with a small spec update?

But Apple has already ditched numbered increments for Mac, MacBooks, TV, and iPads, so ‘new iPhone’ would be a logical next step — even if iPhone 11 would be the most pleasing thing for consumers looking for the obviously best new iPhone.

iPhone 11 cameras: what changes?

This is the only real hardware upgrade we’re seeing from Apple this year, with 2019’s iPhone coming with enhanced picture-taking capabilities. Schematics suggest the same thing, and most chassis leaks hint at the same square cut-out portion.

From the images we’ve seen so far, the design of the iPhone 11’s camera module will not win many plaudits. But the mere idea that it could be the first iPhone to feature three rear camera sensors makes us excited about its possibilities.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has weighed in to say that one of these lenses might be almost invisible, adding at the same time that the selfie camera will get a boost from 7MP to 12MP.

  • The iPhone 11 will be announced today (September 10) just after 6 pm BST. It will hit stores soon after, possibly on September 20 or a week later on September 27
  • It could launch alongside an iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max — so there’ll be three models altogether
  • It will be the first iPhone to run iOS 13 out of the box
  • It’ll likely be the first iPhone to boast a triple-camera setup on the rear, however, this feature may be exclusive to the iPhone 11 Pro
  • Apple’s new A13 chipset will power it, possibly with a new R1 co-processor
  • It could potentially host the largest battery of any iPhone to date
  • 5G connectivity is unlikely to feature on any of this year’s iPhones

NEW iPhone 11 − Performance and software

The A13 entered production in May, according to Bloomberg and it’s expected to have a 7nm node like its predecessor, with the 5nm upgrade set to arrive in 2020. Given that the A12 remains one of the most capable mobile chips on the market, we’re expecting the iPhone 11 to absolutely fly in comparison to its competitors.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reckons that the iPhone will pack 4GB of RAM − just like the iPhone XS − but iOS optimization makes the most of what seems to be a relatively stingy amount of memory in comparison to competitors which increasingly pack in up to 12GB of memory.

NEW iPhone 11 — Battery life, USB-C, and 5G

Rumors (again) from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested in April that the iPhone 11 will pack a huge battery. We’re talking about a 25% capacity boost. That got our hopes up, but more recent leaks have suggested that the capacity boost will be closer to just 5%. A bigger battery is always good news, but this is hardly the game-changer we had hoped for unless the phone itself also improves its power management.

Apple shifted from Lightning to a complete USB-C solution for the iPad Pro last year and has also chosen the standard for all of its modern MacBooks, a change that opened up far greater compatibility for those devices. Unfortunately, Kuo doesn’t think that this is the year for Apple to switch to the USB-C charging on its phones — but we do hope a Lightning to USB-C adaptor will be bundled in the box at least.

While mobile internet might not be the fastest around, the iPhone 11 could have super-fast Wi-Fi. Barclays analyst Blaine Curtis reckons that the new iPhone will benefit from the latest Wi-Fi 802.11 ax standard, more commonly known as Wi-Fi 6, bringing with it a 4x performance boost in crowded areas and 40% higher data speeds.
