xC02_ dear white people,

an open letter to american white folk — including, but not limited to racists, rednecks, nazis, and/or garden variety, comfortable-with-the-status-quo/ maybe-more-than-slightly-nostalgic-for-a-fantasy-time-that-never-actually-existed republicans — you know who you are:

AMERICA IS NOT A WHITE NATION. the USA is NOT white. It never has been. And as long as we follow the Constitution, it never will be.

granted, over the years, there have been a number of citizens who just so happen to be white — including a few of this country’s founders. the USA has been controlled by white people, dominated by white people, and, subsequently, very nearly destroyed by white people. but america is not a white country. please repeat this ad nauseam until you finally, for once, understand it.

now, most of my family and friends are white folk — thankfully, not nationalist, supremacist, or otherwise obnoxious. and, in the interest of full disclosure, i’m a white guy too — perhaps about as white as you can get: born and raised in a conservative community out west with a broad mix of ethnic heritage ranging from Scotland all the way to Norway. like i said, white.

there are several fine and wonderful people in america who happen to be white. but there is also, unsurprisingly, a large number of spiteful bigots and self-righteous, obsequious hypocrites — and much worse.

i have been disturbed as of late, by both white citizens and white elected officials who appear to believe this is their land — and only their land. it seems recent events and this so-called “administration” have rolled back the log and we are seeing with new eyes what many of us refused to believe, but some of us knew all too well, had persisted all along — an ugly, roaring current of brazen racism and seething hatred.

i want to believe in my fellow americans. i want to have hope for humanity, but the evidence is frightening. if you’re still clinging to a failed sense of superiority or morally bankrupt ideology, shut up and sit down. if you think the Confederacy is an honorable heritage, you are only fooling yourself. if you wish to defend “European values” or you feel inclined to fight for your European heritage, GO. BACK. TO. EUROPE.

as for me, i’m an american. And in america, we are all free and equal: red, white, black, brown, beige, pink, fuchsia, chartreuse, cyan, magenta, violet, indigo, ochre, burnt umber, whatever.

i am also, it turns out, a descendant of a Mayflower passenger. and when the Mayflower arrived, “america” was most certainly NOT WHITE. but this is not white guilt. i am not woke. this is nothing but the truth.

you cannot ignore the truth this nation was founded on, despite its failures or in light of our setbacks. the blood spilt for this country and because of it, the genocide of First Nation tribes and the slavery of Africans was just the horrifying beginning, but must not fade from memory or dry in vain. you can call Jefferson a hypocrite, or you can choose, like Martin Luther King Jr., to see that truth as a promise yet unfulfilled.

“When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. i refuse to believe that justice cannot be found and made whole. i refuse to surrender sanity to cowardice, fear, and hatred. i refuse to define myself by my whiteness.

show me where in the Constitution it says that these United States are for white people only and we’ll talk. Otherwise, SHUT. THE. FUCK. UP.
