I remember always wondering what it would be like to ‘lead someone to Christ’ but knew I just never would — then one day out of the blue I received a call, my dear friend was crying on the other end- said she had asked Christ to take over her life — and I was the reason. I being shocked asked her how I was the reason. She said “This is gonnna sound crazy, but you’re the only Christian I know who says the F word.” She started to laugh, and explained that all those years of middle of the night shifts in the ER, the times we laughed, the times we cried, swore, flew around the halls in a crisis, she said ‘no matter what, you were real and always turned to God. I could always know you weren’t pretending- and still had this closeness with God. You weren’t afraid of my crazy life because you had your own crazy life — you didn’t hide it.’ After the call I just had to laugh. I’ve never fit in with church ladies, but then they don’t sit beside a brutalized little teen prostitute or hold the hand of a dying old man, or hang onto parents as their 6 year old is not coming back no matter how long the CPR lasts. Jesus walked the halls with me all 20 years in the ER and sits with me in my trauma sessions. Jesus is not a lifestyle- he’s a person who is God. And a person God who gives a damn. Thank you for sharing your story! And for what you do.
