And the US Civil War was not about slavery. And there were more conflicts than the slavery issue. Tarrifs are one contentious issue that the South felt was unfair.

Another thing to consider that only about 3% of the people in the south owned slaves (which only counts as 1.5% because at the time women were not property owners unless they were widows).

Remember that most of the officers in the US Army fought for the South. And none of them owned slaves.
