We Are Writing the Future

I once heard a Chicano comedian say: Hey have you ever noticed that in Sci-fi movies and books, there are no people of colour? What? Will we not existing in the future? Of course not. We will still be there. But sadly so much “futuristic” creative output seems to envision that we won’t be. I am a writer of “colour” and I feel your piece deeply. I am still seething about Julius Lester’s work being in “teen fiction” in my local library, for instance. But you are right when you say the anger helps us write. Yes, it does. Better, More clear. More precise. And more real. Thank you for this beautifully truthful piece, much peace to you and all the best to keep writing better every day.
