Define what sets you apart from other creatives. And I’m not talking about your skills. Write down what are your rules, principles, non-negotiables when you work on a project. Perhaps you have a specific style or way of working. Dig into this and I promise in one hour you’ll be crystal clear what they are.
This one might surprise a lot of people, because I hear this one in my office all the time. “You don’t respect me,” “I don’t feel respected,” and the infamous “Don’t disrespect me!” Respect is something bosses, commanders, and — yes, unfortunately — parents, demand. And therein lies the problem: like demands and expectations above, it invokes hierarchy. What’s usually behind this (ironically) is a wish to be valued, or treated as an equal. Express those wishes instead.
