How to Decorate for Christmas without Breaking the Bank

It is very important to keep our homes looking nice for special occasions, especially during the holiday season. Taking a little time out of your day to decorate or redecorate can mean that your home will look festive, bright and inviting. It is also important to plan ahead of time for events that might happen during certain times of the year. Here are some tips on how to plan your holiday season and make it a memorable one!

1) Pick up some decorations from around your yard! Make use of what you have, even if you think it looks old or worn out. Repurposing items is an excellent way to conserve money and to add another touch of character to your home. Gather up all of your old, unused ornaments and try to wash or wipe off as much of the dirt/dust as possible before using them again. And don’t forget that if certain items are unusable because they have broken, you can always glue them back together with a hot glue gun!

2) Be sure you have enough Christmas lights! Many homes go with the same colour scheme for their lights year after year, which can get boring after a while. Try mixing it up this season by using different colours and designs. This will make your house stand out and look festive without spending a lot of money!

4) A holiday-themed wreath on the front door is a great way to welcome people to your home. You can make your own using items from around your yard, or you can make one using artificial flowers and garland from a craft store! How about hanging your elf on the shelf from the wreath? You can use that same elf from year to year, or you can purchase a new one every Christmas!

3) Shop at thrift stores or garage sales for great holiday décor items! Don’t let the fact that someone else used these items dissuade you from picking them up. If they are still in good condition, then there is nothing wrong with recycling old stuff into something new and useful this season. You can also make elf accessories that might be missing from your collection.

4) Paint an accent wall! Painting an accent wall is a simple and inexpensive way to redesign your home’s theme for this season. Whether it’s the living room, the front porch or just a hallway, painting one wall can help draw attention to that specific area.

5) Purchase some new throw pillows. Sometimes you just need some basic accent pillows to change up the look of your decorations. You can use these pillows as centrepieces on your couch or chairs or even arrange them all over the house as decoration! It’s important to look for decorative pillows that fit within your colour scheme as well as those that match your holiday theme.

6) Add some greenery to your home! Adding plants and bushes around your yard and home not only looks beautiful but also helps make everything smell fresh and clean! It is especially nice if you have a covered porch or a screened-in area where you can place potted plants.

7) Swap out your light bulbs with energy-efficient ones! It may seem like such a small thing but changing all of your light bulbs to energy-efficient ones can really help cut down your electricity bill for this time of year. Nothing is worse than having to replace old, inefficient bulbs after purchasing new and more expensive lights.

8) Decorate some ornaments for the tree! Every year it gets more and more fun and creative to make some new ornaments for the tree. Many people use ribbon, cotton balls and paint to create some unique pieces while others try using different kinds of materials such as pine cones and stones. Either way, you are sure to make some unusual ornaments that will stand out from the rest of them.

9) Plan ahead! You can not get away with just throwing on some Christmas lights and some stockings by the fireplace after Thanksgiving dinner. Make a list of things that need to be done before December 25th, then check it twice… okay, maybe three times! And in case you didn’t know, it’s never too early to start shopping for the holidays. Stores are already putting out their Christmas decorations and holiday sales just around the corner.

10) Keep your house clean while you’re decorating! Putting up all of your holiday décors means that there are more things in your home for small children to get into so it is especially important to keep everything clean while this time of year. Take pick up around the house at least once a day so you don’t have to worry about anything breaking or being damaged due to too much clutter.

Christmas is the time of year that everyone wants to make particularly special. These simple ideas will help you achieve a more festive home without breaking your holiday budget!
