‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ (2023) | Marvel Studios

Ant-man and The Wasp: Quantumania releases in cinemas tomorrow, so there’s just enough time for last minute speculation. In terms of what could happen in the film itself, it’s something of a mystery. I’m not too familiar with Ant-Man comic books so I couldn’t predict too much on that front, and although I’m a big fan of Kang the Conqueror, I’m aware anything is possible when Kang is involved. However, I feel there’s one thing I can make predictions about, which is the MCU tradition of post credit scenes.

I’m cautious to write predictions for another MCU project. Last year I wrote predictions for Thor: Love & Thunder, and upon revisiting those predictions I found over 80% to be true. This was the next instalment of a pattern. I’ve predicted events in films and TV shows numerous times, with startling accuracy, so I’m a little worried my powers are getting out of control. At least limiting myself to the post credit scenes reduces the risk of potential spoilers. But it’s important to remember I never write predictions with a desire to be proven right, in fact the opposite is true. My predictions are made based on knowledge of the MCU, comic books, and the way popular fiction is typically written. Hence, the more I’m proven wrong, the happier I am because it means creators are surprising me.

I’ve written a list of some possible post credit scenes which could feature in Quantumania. Most MCU films have two post credit scenes, sometimes more, so I’ve provided multiple predictions to keep my options open.

1. The Council of Kangs

Kang is a multiversal threat, so it makes sense to include the Council of Kangs, as seen in the comic books. The Council is a long-standing part of Marvel lore; a collection of Kang variants from across the multiverse who are summoned for all manner of reasons. In the context of Quantumania, I suspect it may actually be the Council of Kangs who banished this particular Kang to the Quantum Realm. Consider the following:

  • There’s a promotional clip of Kang saying he wants revenge on the people who trapped him in the Quantum Realm.
  • Kang hasn’t met the Earth-616 Avengers (as far as we’re aware) so it would appear he wasn’t trapped by any heroes.
  • Kang’s variant from Loki season 1 (AKA ‘He Who Remains’) expressed his fear of some Kang variants. If other Kangs feel the same way, they might have looked for a solution.

Reading those signs, it makes sense the Council would attempt to banish their most dangerous variant. Therefore, the post credit scene could see the Council discussing events of the film, whether they be good or bad.

Also, it’d be great to see more Kang variants, like Immortus, Rama-Tut and the Scarlet Centurion. Give Jonathan Majors as much room to play with this character!

2. A Fantastic Four tease

Kang is an Avengers villain, but he’s also a villain to the Fantastic Four, so it’d be fun to show his ties to both. I’m not sure what this scene would look like, but I’d want it to be subtle. Something which hints that Kang knows the Fantastic Four exist, or a reference to the fact he’s fought them before. Even if it’s a reference to another Fantastic Four from a different universe, it would still be exciting to namedrop them. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness featured a version of Reed Richards, so referencing the Fantastic Four again builds momentum before their proper MCU debut.

I’ll admit I’m biased with this prediction. The Fantastic Four are my favourite Marvel team and I’m very passionate about them, so I’d be happy if the post credits gave me a little FF gift to take home.

‘Captain Marvel’ (2019) | Marvel Studios

3. A tease for Secret Invasion

It might seem random, but the MCU has done this before. It’s not uncommon for post credit scenes to simply tease upcoming projects, regardless of whether they follow directly from what we’ve just watched. For example, the second post credit scene in Ant-Man jumps to a clip of Captain America, Falcon and Bucky, which was a tease for Captain America: Civil War the following year. Sometimes they take a slightly bigger step in order to tease the next project scheduled for release. So, although Secret Invasion is totally unrelated to Quantumania, as far as we know, the post credits may be a chance to tease a project which is releasing very soon.

4. A set-up for Loki season 2

Given how the end of Loki season 1 introduced Kang into the MCU, it would make sense to maintain a throughline from Quantumania to Loki season 2. I’m not sure what this scene would entail, but Jonathan Majors is rumoured to appear in season 2 as multiple variants of Kang, and season 1 concluded on an awesome cliff-hanger, so there’s numerous possibilities. The best way to do this would be to show Loki trying to fully comprehend what he’s up against. Follow from the end of season 1 and show more of Loki’s fear and confusion, and how he’s just barely keeping it together while the threat of Kang looms heavy over the multiverse.

‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ (2021) | Marvel Studios

5. An Avengers moment

It’s possible we’ll see a post credit scene similar to that in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, where Bruce Banner, Captain Marvel and Wong gathered to discuss events and examine the rings. The same heroes may gather following the events of Quantumania, either because they’re monitoring strange activity, or because Scott Lang seeks their advice after he’s encountered Kang. It would be amazing and terrifying for the Avengers to hear about Kang and know they’re truly under-equipped to fight him.

Also, there are fan theories which link certain events and artifacts together. Both the bangles from Ms Marvel and the ten rings from Shang-Chi share a similar design to the architecture of Kang’s citadel in the Quantum Realm. It’s possible these events are linked and are building to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty in 2025. Having another post credit scene which sees the Avengers connecting these dots would help form fresh connective tissue in the MCU.

6. Kang fixing his armour

We’re all aware Kang is the next Avengers level threat for the MCU, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to win in Quantumania. He could take a beating and require time to retreat and re-strategise before a full-scale attack.

Since his first appearance in Avengers issue #8 (1963), the key to Kang’s various powers (aside from his literal time machine) is his armour, which contains technology from the 31st and 41st century. If he’s beaten by Scott Lang and the gang (great name for a band) then he’ll need time to fix the suit and lick his wounds. This could serve as a nice tease for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, showing that Kang is pissed off, he’s set on revenge, and he’s already taking steps to wreak havoc.

I think a scene like this is very accurate for the character. It’s well known Kang is a conqueror across the timeline, but the present day is a period in which he consistently encounters resistance. Upon suffering defeat Kang can retreat and spend as long as he needs preparing for his next encounter with the Avengers or the Fantastic Four. This is one of the reasons Kang is such a terrifying villain. He’s a tactical genius, and one of his greatest assets is time. He could spend as long as he needs fixing weaknesses and upgrading his technology before invading again at any point in the timeline. The possibilities with Kang are endless, so showing his intellect, his cunning and his tactical skills makes him an even scarier villain.

So, there’s my predictions in all their glory. However, there’s still an important question: how likely are they to happen?

  1. Council of Kangs - I think this could happen, but Quantumania may be too soon. I’d imagine this is something we’re more likely to see closer to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. I would be surprised if this happens so soon, but it’s almost guaranteed to happen in the coming years.
  2. Fantastic Four tease - Total wishful thinking. I don’t think this will happen, although I would love it.
  3. Secret Invasion tease - I think this is a strong possibility, but I hope it doesn’t happen. It’s a tangent which stretches too far, with the sole purpose of promoting a series which is already on the horizon.
  4. Loki season 2 tease - This is pretty much guaranteed. It makes sense in terms of the ongoing MCU narrative, and the new season starts within a matter of months. I’d be shocked if this doesn’t happen.
  5. Avengers moment - 50/50 split. It’s possible, but it would also be re-treading ground from Shang-Chi.
  6. Kang fixing the suit - Although it would be a good moment for the character, I don’t think it’ll happen. It feels too dated and cheesy to end on the villain vowing revenge.

If I had to put money on it, which obviously I don’t, I think predictions #3 and #4 are most likely to happen. But there’s still every chance I’m completely wrong. Post credit scenes in the MCU aren’t always consequential, in fact there’s a long history of them being used solely as punchlines. For example, Captain Marvel wasted a post credit scene to show Goose the cat vomiting the tesseract onto Nick Fury’s desk, and Ant-Man and the Wasp showed a giant ant using Scott Lang’s electronic drum kit. Knowing that information, anything is possible.

The post credits for Quantumania could be anything, and that’s exciting! It could be something huge which shatters the entire MCU. It could be a harmless joke. It could be Deadpool and Mobius riding jet skis. Who knows! At the end of the day, the most important thing is that we’re happy and we have fun watching the film. There’s far more fun to be found in the unknown. If creators can surprise us, that’s a heck of a lot more fun than being able to say we were right. That being said, if any of my predictions are correct (again), I’m heading to Vegas to make my millions.
