Creating a Strategic Business Plan
I discovered the benefits of planning the future for my business many years ago. A really strange thing happens when you start to put pen to paper. When you make plans, you start to see those plans actually start to happen for you. It’s a strange phenomenon that can be explained almost logically. I think of it like the law of attraction, which says that the universe provides for you with what your thoughts are focused on, either positive or negative. I think creating a strategic plan is like that.
Once you put your plan onto paper, and when you continue to look at it monitor your actions and results against it, what you’ve written down will start to come to fruition for you. Over the years during different stages of my different businesses I’ve developed strategic plans, I’ve monitored the results, and the things I’ve written down have happened to me. And I think exactly the same things can happen to you.
If you want to achieve great results and you want to change your life and improve your business, I encourage you to sit down and make a strategic plan. I’ve done this so many times in my life, and it’s something I do with my clients all the time.
When I was starting my first business, I sat down and made sure I took the time and attention to plan out where it was I wanted to go and ways to get there. Every single thing that I wrote down came true. One of my coaches told me early on that what you monitor and measure improves and what you don’t monitor and measure actually decreases. If you create a plan, monitor it, and measure yourself against that plan and what you’re doing to achieve your results, those things will actually start to happen for you.
Creating a strategic plan is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your business. Having a strategic plan is often the difference between a successful and unsuccessful business. It is important that you start to think about the future, and that you have the right vision for your business. Even more than just vision, I want you to have anticipation. Anticipation is where you anticipate what is going to happen in the future: what could go wrong, what changes could occur in the market, what issues might come up, what could derail you, what could stop you, and what could distract you.
Start by creating a strategic planning document. This document will help you determine where you want to be, what your goals are, and how you can attain them. Develop a plan for what you want to achieve in the next 12 months. Ask yourself how you are going to achieve each of your goals, and what actions do you need to take for each one? It is also important to include in your plan who is going to execute each action so that your journey to success has people who know what they are responsible for and when.
It’s important that you take a step back to better understand your objectives and you set in place the plans and the motion to get there. If you don’t plan out where you want to go, you are no longer in charge, and you will end up going wherever the wind takes you.
