Meetup in the winter break

Winter break is quite short and today new semester has began. Back to one month ago, after I finished my exams then I started my own project, which basically more focused on front end, so I was thinking about joining some meet up in Sydney. BTW I don’t know what are the engineers doing here and what stacks they are using.

Mongo DB — 27 Jun

It’s the first meet up we found(Linus, Wenhao, Blade), which hosted by Mongo itself, cause they have their office in Sydney.

Mongo SYD office

Nothing fancy, a typical tech company office, I guess there’re probably less than 50 seats in this office.

The theme for this meet up is to highlight some points in the Mongo World 2017 and then introduced some new features they’re currently doing.

Surprisingly, most of the guest came today are around 40 or even older, and most of them are DBA or developers, which is quite different compared with what I saw in China. I remembered every time I joined a tech event most of the participants are around 25.

What’s more, the pizza they provided is the best I’ve ever had in my life. Blade googled the pizza brand called Crust.

React — 3 Jul

Edward just graduated and was at the stage of finding a job so I asked him to come with me. React is the frontier framework in front end, though I’m currently using Angular, I guess probably next month I would do some React experiments.

The first topic is presented by a Chinese about GraphQL, in our perspective, using GraphQL, even people have never learned SQL could start to work after had a 1-hour-tutorial.

The second presentation is quite practical. Kaho introduced their project which is called Powerhouse Museum using React and GraphQL. Actually what most interests me is the slides he made, in the end he said it’s neither PPT nor Keynote, it’s a ReactJS based presentation library. https://github.com/FormidableLabs/spectacle

The third topic was quite boring, after I connected him in LinkedIn I found he is more like a businessman rather than a engineer.

Pizza this time is the normal Dominos which quite disappointed me, but probably this time more than 150 people joined.

Angular — 12 Jul

The same, Edward came with me. It’s hosted next to the Mongo building we came in the first meet up.

Coincidentally I met one of my seniors also from CSE, it’s our second time to meet. He had graduated and worked for three years and now seeking some chance to have his own startup. Then I met a engineer just came from Optiver Shanghai office now in the training session in Sydney.

There were only two topics that day. One is a engineer from Common Bank presented their way to deal with data from back end. The other is a engineer introduced his opensource project about feature toggle.

Pizza? Just Pizza Hut.

It’s quite entertaining to chat with engineers and also building web application is cool.
