“Is anybody here running in remembrance of someone?”

*Put my hand up*

Tough Mudder Instructor: “How did he pass?”

Me: “A car accident.”

*Get lump in throat*

TM Instructor: “what was his name?”

Me: “Kieran.”

Don’t cry don’t cry don’t cry…

TM Instructor: “Well Kieran is watching you today from above.”

…on Saturday I ran with a couple of mates in remembrance of my buddy Kieran who passed in a car accident at the start of December and all those who lost their lives in car accidents.

It was a special day…here’s what I’ve taken from the weekend:

Lesson #1 – I complain way too much

I was a mile in and noticed a board on the side of the course that read “quit whining…kids whine”.

It was true…I was complaining about the the mud in my shoes, the coldness of the water…in reality what is a bit of mud on your clothes? In reality there are problems much much larger. I made a pact that I would quit complaining for the run.

I’ve also tried to bring this with me into my life in general. To just be grateful for everything I have…because life really is good.

Lesson #2 – when you’re why is meaningful enough nothing can stop you

When I felt like giving up I thought of Kieran. I could of ran all day. Mind over matter. Where the mind goes, the man follows.

Lesson #3 – put the same effort into helping people in everyday life as I did in TM

There was an obstacle towards the end similar to a skate board ramp.

People would sprint as fast as they could and Mudders waited at the top with their hands out to grab them and pull them up.

When was the last time you leant a helping hand?

It made me think…holy shit if I forgot all about being rich and famous and just focused on doing everything I can to help people I would be the happiest man alive.

Finally…

Lesson #4 – forget about what’s next, and open your eyes to what’s in front of you

The first time I ran TM I would complete an obstacle and say to myself “what’s next?”

Before I was aware, the race was over.

It made me realise that I was doing the same in my life.

“What’s next Ad?”

Hold on a second, realise that where you are right now is perfect.

All we have and ever will have is now.

Cherish it because before you know it the race will be over.
