“I have no idea where to start”

Bring me back 6 years and ask me where to start when it comes to working out, what I should be eating and what sort of goals I should be setting:
There’s a LOT to be thinking about and it can get overwhelming.
Anything that makes you feel overwhelmed is going to lead to one thing – inaction.
Paralysis by analysis, procrastination…call it what you want.
But the bottom line is that if you start thinking about a billion things at once, you are going to do jack shit about it.
So here are the different pillars you should be thinking about when it comes to starting your fitness journey:
- Nutrition – understand each macronutrient and the role each one plays. Protein to rebuild the muscle and facilitate growth. Carbohydrate for fueling workouts. Fats for hormone regulation.
- Working out – why do you workout? What’s your reason for working out? Is it to feel fitter for sport or as a means of looking more muscular? Match the type of training to how you want to look, feel or perform.
- Recovery – what is the most underrated factor when it comes muscle growth? Sleep. Its overlooked. Don’t be afriad to throw in a deload or rest week as well. No you’re not going to deflate. Recovery is closely linked to nutrition. The speed of your recovery is correlated with the quality of your nutrition.
- Self talk – again overlooked. In my opinion. You are where you are today because of the thoughts you think. Thoughts impact how you feel, feelings impact what you do, so we can ultimately say that our thoughts and self talk dictate our results in life. One way to start thinking differently is to download Calm or Headspace and meditate for 10 minutes a day. Watch what comes up and start challenging your old beliefs.
- Goal setting – finally, you have got to have a map. Set some key performance indicators for your goals. I want to hit a 100Kg squat by____. I want to have abs without tensing. I want to run a 5K without stopping. Clarity = power.
Id recommend focusing on one of the above pillars at a time.
#1 being the most important and #5 not as important AT THE BEGINNING.
