Hope and Fear

A Short Story about the Moment of Death

Death is standing outside a room with a white wooden door upon which a sign reads operation room. In this cold and dark room, a pale old man is lying in the middle of Hope and Fear. His family, who are not more than a few, stand beside Death who is checking the time. Pushing a red button on his watch, Death gets a step closer to the poor man who is now siting on his bed recalling memories from his past. Although he tried so hard not to recall a memory by which his childhood ended, he failed and saw himself losing his childlike trust to a deceiving temptation. After losing his childhood, Hope deserted the poor old man. Fear was all he had. No one could help. The Death was getting close to take his soul. He decided not to waste the time overcoming Fear, and, instead, tried to find something to take with him. Alas! World was full of worthless belongings that could not help. Finally, Death reached the bed, and the old man inhaled the last breath. Inhaled the smell he could very well remember. The smell of childhood was it. Once again hope returned...
