The problem with this thinking is it discards the hundreds or thousands of people who know and love your product just the way it is. I think you are right on the condition that you are prepared to lose every single user you have.
There’s no better example than Microsoft releasing Windows 8 with no Start Menu. It was a core part of their system and people loved it. They took it away and lost respect, trust and I would imagine, customers.
I’m all for trying something new but your legacy features got you a (hopefully) profitable business with (hopefully) lots of customers.
Discarding legacy features is like discarding customers. You better hope they love that fancy drop shadow.
Here’s a counter thought. Offer an option. If you have a list view which you want to change to a card view, why not add an icon so they can switch, then set one as the default. It’s technically so easy and pleases the people who discover the new features or want them, but everyone else can enjoy it the way it is.
