Showing up

Thinking tonight about how much a person’s positive presence can mean, even if very little is said or done, even if it doesn’t feel like a whole hell of a lot has been accomplished.

Sometimes “showing up” means just that — being at the place where someone else is, where your presence alone will make them feel good. (Or where the lack of your presence would make them feel bad.) That would probably be called “support” in most instances.

Sometimes showing up is consistently doing the work, even when (especially when) it feels like a drag. That might mean your job/career, your friendships, your marriage, raising your kids, whatever. When you show up, things get done. Or at least they don’t fall apart. And, over time, you see rewards.

Ever been invited to a party and the host tells you not to bring anything? “Just show up.”

They make it sound so easy!
