“In a world filled with differing voices, why must mine be silenced?”

This question lies at the root of a spiritual journey that has taken many years and continues to challenge me to this day.

Growing up in the west, we are surrounded by and indoctrinated with Christian concepts, or more accurately, moral concepts shrouded in Christian language. This leads us to a narrow and skewed view of morality and religion.

For some of us, who were raised in a more fundamentalist vein, this narrowing can be even more pronounced. …

He was unconscious and barely breathing, lying on the cold sidewalk just after midnight. Someone had called 911 and then left him there. He only had a few minutes left. It was his 21st birthday.

We administered Narcan, the opiate antidote, and he suddenly took a deep breath and woke up, confused, and adamant he hadn’t done any drugs. A short ride to the hospital, and a few hours of observation, and he would go home. He was the lucky one.

Ninety-one not-so-lucky Americans died that day from opiate-related overdoses.

That is 91 homes without father or mothers, brothers or…

I didn’t know I was smart. People tried to tell me and encourage me, but I always needed more time. Growing up, my friends were witty, savage, and processed information far faster than I did. In the US, people equate speed with intelligence. Everyone thinks that the guy who finishes the test first is the smartest.

If you weren’t the fastest, I’ve got some good news. Not only are you smarter than you gave yourself credit for, but you also have some gifts that come with your unique set of skills.

What it means to be slow

In fourteen years working as a healthcare provider, I have never heard a Doctor referred to as a healer. In fact, when I think of that word, I immediately picture someone who is more holistic in their approach. I might imagine a shaman, medicine man, or priest, but not a doctor.

Instinctively, I know that Doctors aren’t able or willing to address my spiritual, emotional, or social needs.

Modern Western Medicine treats the human body, much like my mechanic treats my car. Doctors and Mechanics use various tests to find what is broken, and then they remove the bad parts…

I remember sitting in the back of the ambulance as I treated this very loud woman. She had been drinking, and she had been hit in the head during a domestic disturbance on a street known for less-than-legal activity. As I interviewed her regarding her assault, the following conversation ensued:

“So, were you working the street? Are you a prostitute?” I asked.

“Nah, I ain’t no prostitute.” She replied as she flirted with the police officer standing at the back of the ambulance.

“Do you do sexual favors for money?” I queried.

“Yeah, that’s it. I do sexual favors for…

I turn 37 in a few days. As far back as I can remember, I have dealt with feelings of emptiness and loneliness. You have too. I know because I have watched men like you and me kill themselves with drugs and alcohol. I have seen men waste away from hate, anger, and despair as they tried to fill that void in the pit of their stomach.

A few months back, I helped a friend of mine hike across the state of California to raise awareness for mental health. He lost his brother to suicide. …

We traveled for two days to reach our destination. We flew and then drove over 3,400 miles to land in a cold and frozen place, with no running water, large and dangerous carnivores, and a massive migration of Caribou. The beauty and starkness of the landscape were surreal. The fact that anything lived out here was impressive, and yet there were people, grizzly bears, wolves, Caribou, foxes, and musk ox, to name a few.

The ground seemed designed to make you trip, stumble and fall while fleeing deadly predation. Max speed for humans across the tundra is probably 2 miles…

The day will come when you will look back at your major life choices and wonder if you screwed up.

It’s a fair question. As we grow older, we begin to see the hundreds or thousands of possibilities that have been around us. We also can see more clearly how we’ve failed to take advantage of our opportunity and our talents.

As I approach forty, it is no wonder why people have a “mid-life” crisis. But living in a state of perpetual regret is a surefire way to unhappiness. So what can you do about it?

Embrace the regret….for a moment.

If there is anything…

Happiness, Happiness, Happiness. All everyone ever talks about is happiness. That is a bunch of crap. For years, I thought the focus of my life should be to find happiness and then find more of it. I was wrong. Happiness isn’t found anywhere, and I’m not even sure we should care so much about it. Looking around at suffering and difficulty in the world, what we need more of is adventure.

Bonhoeffer put it this way: “There is no way to peace along the way of safety. For peace must be dared. It is itself the great venture and can…

I blame it all on my mother. Growing up, we had Tony Robbins, and Norman Vincent Peale books strewn about the house. I learned about motivation and drive. Success was and is a big part of my life. She instilled within me the desire and idea to be an entrepreneur. She also taught me how important it is to be a good parent.

The path to success is to take massive, determined action.” Tony Robbins
