The parties didn’t replace what they were trading away. How we didn’t take this as an opportunity to educate our way out of blue collar jobs so that future generations wouldn’t be relying on manufacturing jobs to sustain themselves, I’ll never know. Politicians, like corporations, are all too short sighted. Education is a long game and politicians don’t have the strength or vision to play it. And frankly, I’m not sure the American people do either. It would take a generation or two to transform a blue-collar economy into a white-collar economy. What should have been started in the 1990s probably doesn’t stand a chance now.
