A CEO’s main role is essentially managing the organisation as a whole. They do this by leading the functional experts that make up the senior management team.

They control the modest of a company and are responsible for its profit or loss.

They are also responsible for setting the direction of the company as well as its culture. How the CEO talks, dresses and deals with colleagues all sets the tone for the workplace and are the determining factors for what sort of place the company is to work in. CEO’s set the corporate culture for the corporation so to speak.

Being a CEO is a role that carries a lot of responsibility. If you are considering becoming a CEO, then here is how:

Examine yourself — Be critical and brutally honest. Do you really have what it takes to handle the stress that comes with being responsible for the company as an entity as well as the livelihoods of not just the employees but all the people associated with the company?

Assess your appetite for risk — CEOs often need to make bold, fast, hard decisions. Can you temper that with enough caution not to come across as too staid and risk adverse thereby not growing your company? Do you have the creativity to carve out complex solutions in an increasingly fast paced world?

Decide your end game — If you are passionate about fair trade then becoming CEO of a company that does not apply such principles is a good fit, or are you looking to become CEO to change the company’s perspective?

Plot your career path — Be visible in the company, be passionate about what you do and excel in your work. Find out what key steps are necessary to climb the ladder and proceed upwards.
