Atoms and Life

“The moon and the planets are there. And new hopes for knowledge and peace are there. And therefore as we set sail, we ask God’s blessing. On the most hazardous and dangerous and greatest adventure on which man has ever embarked.”
- John F. Kennedy, 1962.
Atom
The smallest constituent unit of ordinary matter that has a property of a chemical element. When everything else is failing, still there. Still hanging tight. From a neutron to an electron, building up our bodies, breaking down our houses, in the air, in explosives. Not visible for the human eye, nowhere to be seen.
The world is on fire. There’s no faith in humanity, it cannot be restored. The only way we help each other is by colouring our Facebook profile pictures to the Tricolour. The human knowledge is descending. We scour for sympathy, where there’s no humanity left. We are afraid of diversity, when we alone are what’s called scarcity. When need to show mercy, to those who, may they rest in peace, have left our segregated society and are in a place better than here on Tellus, Earth. They cannot respirate anymore. The molecules are slowly decomposing. Only a waste product. They don’t have anyone to bound to. Their city’s not breathing. No fuel can save it. No fire can ignite it, there is no oxygen to keep the dreams lit. Their time’s run out. As if we’re the ones who control our destiny. As if the mighty power’s in our hands. As if the lives of hundreds of thousands of humans is in our hands.
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been told that I could become whatever I desired to. That I could become a; lawyer, teacher, bus driver, whatever my heart told me to follow. But as I got older I found out that this wasn’t the case. Not at all. We don’t believe in each other anymore. We tell each other that the sky is the limit, while we on the other hand have footprints on the Moon. We never show any sympathy nor empathy. When I was a kid, life was all about discovering all the places the world could offer. When I was kid, everyday was a new day to be explored. When I was I kid, I could knock on my friends door at 7 am and we would go out and play football, without having to be afraid of any threats. When I was a kid, I could ask a girl out without having the conscience of what others would think of me and write about me on social medias. Oh man, when I was a kid…
What happened to us? We have lost our faith for mankind and therefore set sail to Mars. To leave this planet as if we are all done exploring our own planet. There are prodigious amounts of atoms to be explored. We tell ourselves that we will one day become mighty and powerful. That we one day will succeed and all this will be over. The Islamic State will be gone, the poverty will disappear, all nature disasters will eventually disappear. And then, and only then, will we be able to rest. That day will never come. The way we act, all of us not just me and you, is just a disgrace to mankind. We express our sorrow for others losses during these tragic years, by posting desperate pictures of a city, thus only to show that we “care” not because we really know what’s been going on. Not because we actually know how much blood; Kurds, Syrians, French, Palestinians and Kenyan have spilled during these tragic years. We don’t know how much blood have been running down these mighty mountains. We don’t know how many people have lost their homes, family members and travelled all the way down to Europe, just to get a fresh new start. What we do know is how to burn their homes in Europe. Young girls are being raped and sold by terrorists, young and brave Peshmerga soldiers are getting buried alive, young kids get to see their parents being slaughtered. But that’s none of our business, because we are sharing pictures of these events. Because we are donating money to funds. We are pathetic.
Atoms are the building blocks, they make up all that matters. We humans don’t have a dream. We don’t know that one day, our lives will be empty and cold. We humans don’t even know which Instagram filters to use.
“In eternity, where there is no time, nothing can grow. Nothing can become. Nothing changes. So death created time to grow the things that it would kill and you are reborn but into the same life that you’ve always born into. I mean, how many times have we had this conversation, detectives? Well, who knows? When you can’t remember your lives, you can’t change your lives, and that is the terrible and secret fate of all life. You’re trapped, by that nightmare you keep waking up into.”
- Matthew McConaughey
