My latest visit to a lake outside Munich inspired this blog post. Bavaria is renowned for its fairytale castles and breathtaking natural landscapes. Among its many treasures, the lakes of Bavaria stand out as some of the region’s most spectacular destinations. When many think of Bavaria, they think of Munich, Regensburg, Wurzburg, other medieval cities, and the town of Fussen housing the famous Neuschwanstein castle. However, many of Bavaria’s breathtaking destinations remain hidden from many tourists. Today, I share some of the beautiful lakes I visited in Germany that everyone who decides to study at MIPLC should visit.

Lake Koenigsee

Lake Königssee

This lake is a must-see and my favourite lake in Germany. The lake can be explored only by a boat which ferries visitors several times a day. It is nestled in the Berchtesgaden National Park and is often considered the “crown jewel” of Bavaria’s lakes. I visited the lake in autumn and the views from the boat were simply breathtaking. The lake has a mysterious green colour that has garnered it a reputation as the emerald gem of Bavaria. When you venture further into the lake and stop at the St Bartholomew church, the lake takes on a gorgeous hue of blue which I believe to be a reflection of the clear blue sky. The church itself is a view to behold with its iconic red domes. The lake’s waters are so clear that you can often see several metres below, making it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike.

At the St Bartholomew church, visitors can complete between 1-hour to 4-hour hikes to stunning views of the forests and Königssee. Because I visited the lake at a time when the boat company had commenced its winter schedule, I could not see the deeper part of the forest — the Obersee. I plan to go back this summer and complete the experience.

Lake Schliersee

Lake Schliersee

Schliersee is one of the lesser-known lakes. This is palpable upon visit because locals frequent the lake, and one can spot tourists on rare occasions. It is also one of the smaller lakes; nevertheless, the water, like most of Bavaria’s, is a stunning hue of blue, and the surrounding hills are ideal for less experienced hikers looking to explore the German countryside.

The Rathaus in Schliersee

The town of Schliersee itself is a very traditional Bavarian town. This is very visible in the architecture of houses with their iconic Bavarian paintings and symbols often reminiscent of the Catholic faith.

Lake Tegernsee

Just an hour’s drive south of Munich, Lake Tegernsee is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and elegant atmosphere. The lake is one of the more popular lakes in Bavaria, and you would often find many people at the lake’s bank and even taking a dip in the water, especially in the summer. One can step away from the busy lake area and hike or take a cable car to Wallberg, with an incredible view of the German Alps. It is a lake I will visit repeatedly because of its proximity to Munich and views that never get old.

I do not highlight the lakes Eibsee and Chiemsee because I have yet to have a chance to visit them despite taking trains that cross these lakes.

However, those are arguably the most famous lakes among tourists, and it is easy to find information on them. Another lake that deserves mention is the Amersee, an hour from Munich and a favourite for fans of sailing.

For students in Munich, the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature is a unique privilege. The Bavarian countryside and its lakes offer a wealth of experiences that are not easily accessible to others. If you find yourself studying in Munich, I highly recommend making the most of these opportunities. The memories and views you’ll take away from these trips will stay with you forever.
