THE JOURNEY OF MARIA FEODOROVNA
Maria Feodorovna, born Princess Dagmar of Denmark, embarked on a captivating journey marked by love, tragedy, and royalty. Raised in a carefree yet god-fearing environment alongside her sister Alexandra, ‘Minnie’ displayed both beauty and intelligence early on.
Fate intervened as Maria’s father ascended to the throne of Denmark, making her one of Europe’s most sought-after princesses. Her path crossed with Tsarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich of Russia, sparking a love story cut short by Nicholas’s untimely death in 1865. His dying wish for Maria to marry his younger brother, Alexander III, led to an engagement in 1866.
Maria’s transition to Russia initially raised concerns, but her warm demeanor quickly endeared her to the public. As Grand Duchess Maria Feodorovna, she and Alexander had five children, forming a close bond with her son George. The upheaval of the Russian Revolution in 1917 prompted Maria to flee to London, taking with her exquisite jewelry pieces, including the famous diamond brooch and the Duchess’s Pearl Wave Tiara adorned with over 500 diamonds and 18 pearls.
The festoon sapphire necklace, a highlight of Maria’s collection, featured a 159.25-carat center sapphire and 15 other sapphires and diamonds. Unfortunately, the Bolsheviks confiscated most of her imperial jewels after the revolution.
Adastra Jewelry, known for exquisite craftsmanship, has recreated some of Maria Feodorovna’s iconic pieces, such as the Duchess’s Pearl Wave Tiara and the festoon sapphire necklace.
