Where private investors access proven start-ups
Folks that work in private companies like Dropbox or Uber sacrifice a lot to build the company from the ground up. Sadly, all too often, they are clueless about how and how much they’re getting paid.If you were offered an 80,000 salary, but didn’t know what currency you’d get paid in, would you take it?
Probably not, since you don’t know how much of a gamble it is. Employees that join a start-up because they receive “50,000 options” without knowing much else are making the exact same bet without knowing.
I’m building a company aimed at correcting this knowledge gap.EquityZen is built for shareholders, investors, and companies.
Shareholders: if you own preferred shares, common shares, or ESOP, in a growing private company, you get cash before the company exits.
Investors: if you want to invest in Series D company with a $50,000 check, and don’t know have a partner at Sequoia that owes you a favor.
Companies: if you’re at least a year away from an IPO or an M&A event, and don’t know that you’re losing key employees or candidates in a talent war, offer them a liquidity plan along side a 401K.
EquityZen is already selling shares for companies like Dropbox, ZocDoc, and AppNexus. If you know folks at mature start-ups that might benefit from this, send them our way.
Our blog has been called the VentureHacks for employees. If you know someone about to join a start-up, make sure they know their odds.
