In a continued overdose where a person can lose their ability to breathe, it endangers the person. This is one of the reasons why they die of an overdose. When the breathing is stopped, the oxygen level will drop causing the heart to breathe lethally. It can cause lack of blood flow to the brain along with lack of oxygenation which typically results in brain damage or death.
