This reminds me of an iconic line from Men In Black, “A person is smart. People are dumb, crazy, dangerous animals.”

We (people) naturally want to chunk together groups of other people to make it easier for our brains to process. But the problem for journalists becomes the assumptions made about the individual when using the group as a mental model.
